Waldsiedlung St. Joahannes-Evangelist
Urban Design expert call for the transformation of
the St. Johannes-Evangelist graveyard in Berlin Reinickendorf. The graveyard ought to be converted into a public parc and some residential areas.
1. Prize
The St.Johannes-Evangelist graveyard is located in the centre of Berlin Reinickendorf. It´s direct neighbourhood to the UNESCO listed settlement "Schillerpark" by Bruno Taut ought to be respected by a bufferzone to the architectural heritage.
We have teamed up with Machleidt´s again and developed a structure of courtyards that swim like islands in the former fields of graves and by this save almost all the existing trees which mainly form the character of the graveyard. Instead of trying to continue the existing building structures from the context we add a self-confident new neighbourhood with huge potential for public, common and private free spaces.
The courtyards contain serveral housing typologies with a focus on common spaces for it´s residents. By a wild mix of housing types (Townhouses, Duplex, Lofts, Maisonettes, Cluster-Appartments) a variety of lifestyles can be combined. The "house of the neighbourhood" f.e. contains common rooms which move around the staircases on every second level and turn the house into to an open accessible structure for
it´s users.
